New seabed-mounted tidal turbines design competition launched

4 December 2014

A competitive design competition is in the pipeline by the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult’s Marine Farm Accelerator (MFA) in collaboration with the Carbon Trust.

The competition is to reduce the cost of the installation processes for seabed mounted tidal turbine foundations and to standardise the mechanical interface between the foundation structure and turbine.

Catapult LogoIt is expected that a short list of between 3 – 5 suitably qualified candidates will be drawn up from applicants who will then provide concept designs drawings, supporting evidence, and associated cost profiles. Between 1 – 3 are then to move on to provide detailed design drawings, performance specifications, supporting evidence, and associated cost profiles.

The final stage is to be manufacture and demonstration of the final solution at a suitable test site, intended to be a commercial array site, in 2016/17.

While ORE Catapult has announced its intent to run the competition full details are expected in early 2015.
