This week the energy industry gathered between 14th and 16th May in Glasgow for the annual Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Management Conference. It is the 25th year the conference has brought together experts from inside and outside the industry to network, share best practice and drive improvement in the vital field of health and safety.
David Smith, Chief Executive of conference co-hosts Energy Networks Association, said:
“The health and safety of employees and the public is a top priority for the energy industry, and it is an area where we have made great progress in the years since privatisation. However, it is clearly an area where there is no room for complacency and this conference will focus minds on where we can continue to improve.”
Sheila Duncan, HR Director at conference co-hosts ScottishPower said:
“The energy industry relies on a skilled workforce, carrying out complex tasks, often in challenging conditions. It is critical that health and safety is at the centre of everything we do.
“The energy industry has worked tirelessly in recent years to promote and raise the awareness of health, safety and wellbeing for employees and their families, and it is important that collectively we keep driving improvements. The SHE conference allows companies to come together, to share learnings, and to continue improving safety standards and practices for the benefit of everyone in the energy industry.”
Judith Ross, Head of Network Regulation Policy at Ofgem, outlined the role of the regulator in health and safety management. She said:
“At Ofgem we are aware of the need for industry to lead on health and safety matters. However, it is vital for the regulator to work constructively with the industry in the interests of all parties. The RIIO framework embeds that collaborative approach over the price control period and will drive improvement across the sector, including in the area of health and safety.”
Sarah Veale, HSE Board member and Head of Equality and Employment Rights at the TUC, spoke about the recent developments in health and safety regulation and the role of the HSE in helping companies to provide healthy and safe working conditions. She said:
“I am impressed that throughout the Powering Improvement initiative there has been a high level of co-operation between all parties, including the HSE and trade unions. This is a cornerstone of the industry’s improving health and safety record.
“The HSE, employers and trade unions are committed to playing a leading role in continuing this collaborative approach”.
