SIMEC Atlantis Energy announced on 31 October that it has signed a contract to supply tidal generation equipment and offshore construction services to Japan’s Kyuden Mirai Energy for a tidal demonstration project in Japan.
The project, located off the southern Japanese coast, will seek to capitalise on Japan’s wealth of tidal resources.
In an industry first, Atlantis will be exporting Scottish tidal generation equipment to be used for the duration of the project under a rental agreement.
Earlier in the month, on 9 October, the Scottish Government announced a collaboration between Scotland and Japan, which will Scottish and Japanese companies will receive £9mn from a joint fund to work together on innovative subsea technology. Combined with investment made by the companies themselves, a total of £20.9mn of industrial research and development will go ahead.
