More than one million customers switch off Big Six electricity suppliers

electricity billsA total of 3.3 million UK electricity customers have changed supplier in the last twelve months since Energy UK started publishing the monthly switching report.

The last year has also seen around 1.3 million customers move from Britain’s ‘Big Six’ utilities to a small one. The total number of electricity switches remained consistent with the previous year.

However for the same period, the percentage of people moving from a large supplier to a small one doubled from 19% to 41%

Angela Knight, Chief Executive, Energy UK  – the trade association for utility suppliers – said: “Competition and choice help customers get a good deal. As more companies enter the market the range of deals across the sector becomes more varied and today’s switching numbers show customers are clearing taking advantage of the choice on offer.

There has been a shift in how customers choose supplier. The percentage of switches to small suppliers has doubled in the last twelve months and the market share of these companies has grown significantly.

“Companies of all sizes are offering varied and competitive deals so if a customer hasn’t switched in a while they should log on to a price comparison site or call their supplier to see if they could save by switching.”
