Murray’s metals arm wins six figure N. Sea contract with Det norske

Alphastrut Murray Metals photoAlphastrut – which provides aluminium support systems to the global offshore industry – has been awarded a six figure contract with Det norske to provide raised access flooring on the Ivar Aasen development in the northern North Sea.

The Alphastrut system will cover a total of 450m2 and was selected for its ability to offer a sub floor cable management system. Alphastrut is the only raised access flooring system in the world which allowed for the requirement of three layers of cable management, each separated by a 30mm gap, to aid air conditioning.

The system is being fabricated by SMOE in its Singapore yard and is expected to be integrated into the asset in Q1 2015.  As part of the deal, Alphastrut will also provide on call support and training.

The low density of aluminium makes Alphastrut more than 50% lighter than steel alternatives, whilst the design offers a significantly improved strength-to-weight ratio over steel products with the same load-bearing capacity.

An investment vehicle, Murray Metals Investments, was created specifically to purchase Bellshill-based Alphastrut in May 2014 on behalf of Murray Capital and the management of Murray Metals.

Murray Metals (MM) was formed in 2012 with the sale of Murray Metals by Murray International Holdings to members of its management and Murray Capital, the private investment company of Sir David Murray and the Murray family, headquartered in Edinburgh.

Alphastrut was developed to help BP save as much weight as possible over conventional support systems on the Valhall redevelopment project. The system was used extensively throughout the project for all M&E and HVAC supports, all architectural supports and raised access floors within the LQ and PFS modules.

David Lawson, Managing Director, Alphastrut, said: “We are pleased to be awarded this significant contract with Det norske and it is extremely promising to see that the full potential and capabilities of Alphastrut is being recognised within the industry.

Murray Metals Group holds the global licensing agreement for the Alphastrut product which is designed and manufactured by Support Solutions & Fabrications Ltd.
