New report calls for routes to market for Scottish wave and tidal energy

New research from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and sponsored by BEIS has highlighted the potential in Scotland for wave and tidal energy.

Published on 8 March, the report called for routes to market for the technologies in the Highlands and Islands. HIE said that the lack of support for wave and tidal through the Renewables Obligation and the Contracts for Difference is making development more challenging, with offshore wind being given much more support, resulting in it being more competitively priced. The report estimated that wave and tidal energy could be worth up to £800mn to the UK by 2035. HIE said that Scotland has around 25% of Europe’s tidal stream potential, equivalent to approximately 10GW, and 10% of wave resource with a potential of around 15GW.
