Ofgem approves of SSEN derogation for Orkney connections trial

On 6 September, Ofgem announced it had approved a derogation for Scottish & Southern Electricity Network (SSEN) so that it can trial its Alternative Approach to connection queue management. This would be an alternative solution to the current first-come, first-served basis.

Ofgem has approved Part 1 of the derogation, to allow the one-off unfixing of securities and liabilities for the Orkney trial only.  However, Part 2 of the trial, which would temporarily remove the liabilities related to reinforcing the subsea cable connecting Orkney to the mainland, has been rejected by Ofgem on the basis that it places an “undue risk” on consumers, while giving Orkney developers an unfair competitive advantage.
