Leading pipe casing accessory and completion tool company Downhole Products – based in Porthlethen, near Aberdeen – has won a $1.6 million (appx £1 million) deal to supply oil exploration and drilling companies in Abu Dhabi.
The work comes via its long-term partners Al Ghaith Oilfield Supplies & Service – which has been working in the UAE for almost 20 years, supplying various equipment to local operators.
The deal was concluded recently following the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) event – at which Humza Yousaf, MSP, Scotland’s Minister for External Affairs, led a trade delegation of 40 Scots companies operating in the oil and gas industries.
Downhole Products is a British based company with headquarters in Aberdeen, Scotland, UK and offices in the USA, Asia and the Middle East. Founded in 1994, and internationally renowned as a market leader, Downhole designs, manufactures and supplies a range of casing accessories and completion tools, including centralisers, reamer guide shoes and cable clamp protectors.
Last year, Downhole Products moved to new, larger premises in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Freezone, where it now employs six people, plus two other people in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The most recent addition is Aberdeen-born Michael Fraser who has joined the team in the role of operations manager and will focus on Baku and the Caspian region – an area of particular growth for the company.
Martin Pirie, Downhole Products’ regional manager, said: “This is our company’s largest ever single volume order for centralisers, which represents an excellent step forward in terms of our expanding market share in the region, whilst offering our clients a ‘one stop shop’ for casing accessory requirements.
“We have been working closely with our partners Al Ghaith for some 17 years and we are delighted that this partnership continues to blossom for the benefit of both parties, with this contract being a true testament to the ongoing success of our working relationship.”
Yousaf commented: “Scottish Government links with the Gulf States are no more evident than in the oil and gas sector with trade between our countries booming.
“Our engineering and contracting companies have evolved into one of the strongest supply chains in the world operating in over 100 markets. Total international sales from the sector increased by 5.8% in 2011/12 to reach £17.2 billion.”
Pirie added: “Our presence at ADIPEC – the largest oil and gas exhibition in the Middle East – again generated a large amount of interest from many major companies operating within the region and we’ll be following these up in the coming weeks and months.”
