The All-Parliamentary Group for Renewable and Sustainable Energy (PRASEG) and the Green Alliance hosted an event on 22 January to discuss the role of onshore wind in the UK.
The SNP’s Alan Brown said that the party supports onshore wind but the UK government is too focused on nuclear – he said that the upcoming Energy White Paper must revaluate onshore wind. He also recommended a review of National Grid’s transmission charges, arguing that wind farms in the north of Scotland are penalised for transmitting over long distances.
Other panellists recommended introducing a presumption in favour of renewable development on green belt land and new policies to incentivise community-owned wind farms.
