Statkraft has entered into a long term power purchase agreement (PPA) with renewables developer RES for the output of 18 wind turbines across two wind farms in north east Scotland and Cumbria.
The deal, which will last for up to 15 years, encompasses the purchase of electricity and renewable benefits from the two onshore sites, and will have a combined capacity of 22 MW. Meikle Carewe, which was completed this year, is situated near Aberdeen and includes 12 x 850kW wind turbines. Tallentire Wind Farm features 6 x 2MW Vestas V80 wind turbines.
Together the two wind farms generate clean, renewable energy equivalent to the annual electricity demands of almost 15,000 homes a year.
Funding for the projects is being provided by Germany’s KFW bank which funds low carbon infrastructure and energy projects across the world. Under the deal, RES will continue to own and operate the two wind farms.
Tim Foster, Head of Renewable Origination at Statkraft, said: “This double deal with RES represents an exciting addition to Statkraft’s rapidly expanding portfolio of contracts with leading companies in the renewables sector.
“The Meikle Carewe and Tallentire wind farms underline the considerable growth opportunity for UK wind energy projects and we look forward to working with future partners looking for a viable alternative to the Big Six with their PPA contracts”.
Gordon MacDougall, Chief Operating Officer, RES UK & Ireland, commented: “We are delighted to have partnered with Statkraft on this long term deal at two of RES’ highly successful UK wind farms. In addition to being a flexible and open PPA provider, Statkraft shares our commitment to long-term renewable energy solutions to meet the energy needs of UK households for years to come.”
RES – with offices in Glasgow, Newcastle and East Kilbride – is one of the world’s leading offshire wind, wave and tidal energy developers, with operations across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. At the forefront of wind energy development for over 30 years, RES has developed and/or built more than 7,700MW of wind energy capacity worldwide.
In the UK alone, RES currently has more than 1,000MW of wind energy projects either constructed, under construction or consented.
From a standing start in 2010, Statkraft has since delivered PPA agreements for a broad range of customers, from international development companies to community wind farms.
Statkraft offers both short and long term PPAs suitable for all forms of renewable technology and the company’s portfolio spans over 600MW of contracted operational PPAs with wind, biomass and solar generators.
