Scotland’s Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse has called on the UK government to urgently review the limitations of the Contract for Difference (CfD) auction system, in order for Scotland to meet its net zero commitments and decarbonisation goals.
In a statement on 20 September, he stated: “I believe that floating wind, wave and tidal developers must be given the same opportunity to deploy devices at scale and drive down costs. We will continue to press the UK government to commit to a fairer system that offers early stage technologies the chance to replicate the cost reductions we are seeing in offshore wind.”
He also noted that, whilst further reductions in the strike price will support consumers, it will “put further pressure on Scotland’s supply chain to compete in a global market,” where it will “be essential that the commitments given in the Offshore Wind Sector Deal are honoured.”
