Scottish scientists and Pale Blue Dot experts in carbon-capture sector showcase new research at UK energy expo

Against a backdrop of renewed ambition for carbon capture and storage in Scotland and rUK, scientists from Scottish Carbon Capture & Storage (SCCS) and project partners will describe their innovative research as part of European climate action at an energy conference in Glasgow today

SCCS’s partner institutes are involved in five leading carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects currently being supported by the UK’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and co-funded by the European Union, under the ERA-NET ACT initiative, to accelerate the delivery of the climate technology across Europe.

Delegates will also be given a brief introduction by Joanne Booth to ERA-NET ACT, which is funding eight projects in total. The two other projects involving researchers from Scotland are:

DETECT: research collaboration to determine the risk of carbon dioxide leakage along fractures in cap rocks (sealing layers) above CO2 storage sites. (SCCS partner institute involved: Heriot-Watt University)

Pre-ACT: a research and industry initiative to provide storage site operators and regulators with protocols to support safe and efficient monitoring systems. (SCCS partner institutes involved: BGS)

ALIGN-CCUS: Joanne Booth, of British Geological Survey (BGS), will speak about this multi-partner project to provide blueprints for transforming Europe’s industrial regions into economically robust, low-carbon centres by 2025. (SCCS partner institutes involved: BGS, The University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University)

ELEGANCY: Joanne Booth will outline the objectives, activities and UK case study in this large research and industry consortium project to enable a low-carbon economy through hydrogen and CCS. (SCCS partner institute involved: BGS)

ACT Acorn: Steve Murphy of Pale Blue Dot Energy, which leads the ACT Acorn project, will describe this cutting-edge steam methane reforming (SMR) hydrogen project with CCS in north east Scotland, which aims to deliver a low-cost CCS system by 2023 and a starting point for a wider CCS network serving Europe. (SCCS partner institutes involved: University of Aberdeen, The University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University).
