Leading renewable energy consultancy, SgurrEnergy, met with Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable MP, secretary of state for business, innovation and skills, yesterday to discuss the company’s role of innovation in the offshore renewable energy industry.
Discussing in detail the company’s pioneering remote sensing device, Galion Lidar, SgurrEnergy took Dr Cable through ground-breaking offshore wind data and the implications that this has for the industry.
The meeting was part of Dr Cable’s visit to Glasgow to open the UK Government funded Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, established to drive technology innovation and ensure maximum UK benefit in the offshore renewables industry.
Andrew Jamieson, chief executive of ORE Catapult, said:

Opening the ORE Catapult offices, Dr Cable MP said:
“We are already, in the UK, the world leader in offshore wind, with more capacity than any other country in the world and, of course, lessons have been learned around that.”
“Britain has the opportunity to be the world leader, bar none, in offshore renewable technology and I think this is a tremendous thing to be able to aim for.”
SgurrEnergy, part of Wood Group, launched the Galion Lidar in 2009 and has successfully deployed it for measurement campaigns globally.
Galion is a laser-based wind profiler device for wind speed measurement and directional data capture. With its mature remote sensing technology, it is a pioneering, cutting-edge wind speed measurement technology with a unique all-sky scanning capability and up to 4km range, which is transforming the way that wind is measured and analysed.
