The low-profile national installation of the UK smart meter programme has notched up a milestone in Dundee after nearby Perth-based utility Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) installed its 150,000th meter in a customer’s home.
Smart meters have the potential to help consumers reduce their household energy bills by making use of wire-less information technology to remotely switch electrical applies on or off and/or by scheduling use of such appliances at off-peak times.
The UK milestone was reached at the home of SSE customer Will Cavanagh, who was very happy to have received his smart meter.
He said: “The installation all went well and the SSE engineer explained everything very clearly. Having a smart meter means I don’t need to worry about forgetting to send in meter readings anymore, I’ll get accurate bills automatically.”
An SSE spokesman added: “It’s fantastic to have now installed more than 150,000 smart meters and we look forward to introducing even more customers, like Mr Cavanagh, to the world of smart in the months and years ahead.
“Smart meters will revolutionise the way that we interact with our customers and present a once in a lifetime opportunity to build customer trust and engagement. It’s critical we get this right for our customers, so we will continue to deliver the roll out with a ‘do it once, do it right’ attitude – starting slowly, learning quickly and ramping up soon after. “
