Orkney Energy Audit
Closing date: 12pm, Tuesday, July 15, 2014
Tender value: £25,000
The Orkney Renewable Energy Forum (OREF) is working with Community Energy Scotland to develop the local energy economy and is now commissioning an energy audit for the county and would like to hear from interested providers who can:
- quantify current energy sources and uses
- evaluate the potential of local energy sources
Limits within the electrical distribution network both around Orkney and to the UK national grid are restricting the productive use of renewable resources.
In parallel with attempts to improve export capacity, renewables generators and other interested parties want to establish fully the sources and uses of energy across transport, heating and power by the domestic, private and public sectors.
This study will also identify opportunities to displace imported energy with locally sourced alternatives that provide better value (defined below) to people in Orkney.
Value for money is a selection criterion for this tender. An indicative maximum budget for the study is £25,000 excluding VAT. A maximum deposit of 25% of the total cost of the agreed work is permissible for project initiation.

Shapinsay Low Carbon Marine Transport
Closing date: Now extended to 3pm, Thursday, 3 July 2014
Tender value: £9,000 appx
Shapinsay Development Trust (SDT) is a charitable community organisation on the Orkney island of Shapinsay. One of SDT’s income sources is a trading subsidiary that operates a grid-connected 900kW wind turbine on the island. Among the services SDT funds is an out of hours passenger ferry service linking Balfour Village with Kirkwall on the Orkney Mainland.
The wind turbine experiences high levels of curtailment, due to its non-firm grid connection and constraints applied by the distribution network operator. The ferry service meanwhile faces increasing costs.
The Shapinsay Low Carbon Transport Project wants to make better use of the turbine by capturing some of its curtailed output as fuel or energy suitable for a sea-going passenger vessel.
The Shapinsay Development Trust in Orkney is investigating ways to use its 900kW turbine to provide fuel/energy for a passenger launch service that links the island with Kirkwall. The trust would like to contract expertise in the fields of low carbon vessel design and shore-side infrastructure as well as transport business planning for a two-month design and feasibility study.
