Three Scottish oil and gas companies – all based in the Grampian area – have each won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the 2015 awards for international trade and exports, announced to coincide with the Queen’s birthday.

Two – Global Pipe Components and Balmoral Comtec – are based in Aberdeen, while the Aubin Group is based in Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious accolades for businesses and individuals in the United Kingdom. They are valid for five years.

Winners have to demonstrate that their business has achieved substantial growth in overseas earnings and in commercial success (for their business size and sector) through either outstanding achievement over three years or continuous achievement over six years.

Bucksburn-based Global Pipe Components Ltd is a supplier/stockist of valves, pipes, fittings, flanges, studbolts, gaskets and associated pipeline products in all sizes and materials. The company was established in 2000, primarily serving companies in North Sea Oil. In its latest financial year, it had a turnover of around £6 million.

The nature of the company strategy means that the business is reactive to the key customers’ activities, but the company has strengthened its overseas position by gaining key market knowledge and contacts in major markets, as well as developing an understanding of export procedures and restrictions that they can perform reliably in markets with strict rules on importing, such as Russia. It wins the Queen’s Award for International Trade for outstanding overseas sales growth over the last three years.

Founder and Managing Director Richard Meldrum said: “This is a wonderful acknowledgement of everything we have achieved in the last 15 years and is testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone on the team.”-

Aberdeen-based Balmoral Comtec Ltd is a subsidiary of Balmoral Group Holdings Ltd and was established in 2006. It manufactures technologyled buoyancy, insulation, and elastomer products which it supplies to the global oil and gas industry and holds 2010 and 2012 Queen’s Awards for International Trade.

This technology-led company has increased overseas sales on an upward trajectory by £20 million over the last three years, and profits have doubled. Their business in deep water areas of the world where their oil and gas customers are sited means that they do not operate to traditional country boundaries. The company is able to show continued positive performance over their previous Award with the total increase in overseas sales calculated at 61%.

Aubin Group – based in Ellon – is a specialist developer and supplier of chemical solutions for application in the oil and gas sector, ranging from quality well services chemicals to innovative subsea materials and has been in operation since 1986.

The company has headquarters in Aberdeenshire, UK and an office in Dubai. With the support of local partners, Aubin Group now exports to over 16 markets. The UAE is currently the biggest overseas market, accounting for 45% of sales, and new business in the last three years has been secured in eight countries and these regions now represent 67% of international sales.

Approximately one quarter of the company’s staff are employed in research and development activities. It wins the Queen’s Award for International Trade for outstanding growth in its export earnings of 108% in the last three years.
