In a surprise announcement, the UK government has it has signed an agreement with Hitachi and Horizon to support the financing of the development of a new nuclear power station at Wylfa through a UK guarantee.

In a move which caught many industry observers unawares, the signing of an agreement with Hitachi and Horizon to support the development of a new nuclear power station at Wylfa Newydd on Anglesey is ‘a strong signal of the Government’s commitment to new nuclear.’

David Jones, MP, the Welsh Minister, said that the UK government’s new National Infrastructure Plan “demonstrates this Government’s ongoing, steadfast commitment to new nuclear in the UK, and in supporting Hitachi’s investment in Wylfa Newydd”.

This is the second major government initiative to support new nuclear electricity power stations – coming hard on the heels of its agreement on a strike price for nuclear power to be generated from another new power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset.
