Whitelee onshore windfarm to house super battery

The UK’s largest onshore windfarm is to undergo a purpose-built super battery development, which will be one of the biggest battery projects in the UK. Announced by site owner ScottishPower on 11 June, the Whitelee windfarm in Scotland, comprised of 215 turbines, will charge the 50MW lithium-ion battery system to support the National Grid in maintaining electricity grid stability and resilience even when the wind is not blowing. Installation work is expected to start early next year with the facility expected to be fully operational by the end of 2020.
