BP and ConocoPhilliips have today shut down operations from their respective Valhall platform and Eldfisk and Embla fields in the UK and Norwegian sectors of the North Sea.

BP is evacuating workers as a precaution after a barge broke its moorings and is being tossed around in heavy seas in a winter storm about 10 miles from the platform.

A BP spokesman said: “We have decided to shut production (at Valhall) and there will be a total demanning of the platform. There are 71 people left on the platform and they are being evacuated as we speak.”
