The “most advanced 3D digital modelling of the UK’s electricity grid” will be launched by Scottish Power Energy Networks (SP Energy Networks), Geo-data specialist Fugro announced on 2 August.
The network operator plans to introduce the technology to reduce the risk of power cuts and in preparation for the introduction of artificial technology across its network in the future.
Fugro has been awarded a three-year contract to develop a precise model of SP Energy Networks’ complete overhead line network using 3D models and advanced analytics. It will record the network using aerial survey data, which will ultimately be used to identify where vegetation and other external factors might disrupt the network.
Scott Mathieson, Network Planning and Regulation Director at SP Energy Networks, said: “With the ever-increasing electricity demand in the UK, and the security and stability of our infrastructure that that requires, it’s never been more important to be as agile and proactive as possible with our asset management.”
