According to an independent review, Scotland has been found to be performing well regarding its air quality by both EU and global standards.
Announced on 29 August, the review, chaired by Professional Campbell Gemmell revealed emissions on most pollutants continue to fall as a result of Scotland’s Cleaner Air Strategy, and has recommended a precautionary public health approach to air pollution reduction, as well as further consideration on the impact of new building developments on air quality levels. Additionally, further emphasis should also be given to the shift to more sustainable transport modes.
In response to the review, Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham stated that government “will take the time to consider the review’s recommendations in detail before formally responding following a public consultation to gather wider views”.
