The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) announced on 31 March that Orbital Marine Power, a Scottish based tidal energy developer, has ambitions to install its first floating tidal farm at its centre in Orkney.
Orbital is currently in the process of manufacturing its first commercial O2 2MW turbine. This first turbine is expected to be grid connected at EMEC by the end of 2020 with a view to being fully operational in early 2021. The second berth at EMEC’s test site will be used to deliver a 4MW floating tidal turbine farm. The second turbine anticipated to be installed by 2022. During a previous testing campaign of a turbine in 2018, up to 25% of Orkney’s electricity demand was provided.
