The commitment to developing community energy schemes in an Independent Scotland – as detailed in the Scottish Government’s 670-page White Paper ‘blue-print’ for independence – has been welcomed by Community Energy Scotland.

The White Paper commits an Independent Scotland to “developing new models of community ownership and community benefit from energy generation and delivering real community empowerment”.

Community Energy Scotland is the national charity which supports community and local ownership of renewable energy generation.

Steven Watson, Corporate Manager, Community Energy Scotland, said ‘Regardless of the issues around independence itself, the White Paper is an opportunity to understand the current thinking of the Scottish Government on what they feel needs to be done on energy matters.

“Currently responsibility for energy lies at an EU, UK and Scottish level.  Learning what the SNP would plan to change should the Scottish people vote for independence next year must be worth reading”.
