The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen Section has announced applications for its 2014-15 student bursaries are now open.

Five bursary awards of £2,500 and fifteen bursaries of £500 are available for the 2014-15 academic year, a total of £20,000.

SPECurrent full time under-graduate, post-graduate and PhD students attending Aberdeen, Robert Gordon, Dundee and Heriot-Watt universities are invited to apply. Criteria for applications includes studying a course directly relevant to the oil and gas industry, intention to work within the industry, academic merit and active involvement in the SPE.

Mr. Ross Lowdon, chairman of SPE Aberdeen, said:

“We are pleased to announce that we will again be awarding a significant number of student bursaries this year. The most exciting part of this process is seeing the talent of the future emerging and hearing a different perspective and views on the oil and gas industry.

“The financial support that SPE Aberdeen has provided to Scottish students is now well into the six figure bracket, not only through our provision of annual bursaries, but also through free to attend and subsidised events, visits to major operators and mentoring and networking opportunities.

“We know that there are still many years left of oil and gas production however one of the oil and gas industry’s main problems is attracting and retaining young talent. SPE Aberdeen plays a vital role in supporting all students of all ages, starting from primary school through to mature graduates, and encouraging them to take an interest in the oil and gas sector and the rewarding career paths on offer.”

The top bursary award winners for 2013-14, each receiving £2500, were:

• Richard Cooper, MEng Mechanical and Offshore Engineering, Robert Gordon University

• Nick Simmister, MSc Integrated Petroleum Geoscience, University of Aberdeen

• Maya Hussain, MSc Petroleum Engineering, Heriot Watt

SPE Aberdeen has a dedicated Student Development Committee consisting of industry professionals, representatives of SPE student chapters and academic sponsors. The committee provides opportunities for Scottish university students to enhance their technical knowledge and professional competence through industry events and specialised conferences, as well as more informal meetings.
