Pupils from St Margaret’s School for Girls have been crowned winners of ICoTA (Intervention and Coiled Tubing Association) Europe and SPE Aberdeen’s Junior Energy Apprentice competition, beating nine other Aberdeen and shire schools to the award.

Along with Banff, Aboyne and St Machar Academies, the school was a finalist in this year’s competition, which aimed to encourage young people into the industry and to find the creative thinkers of tomorrow.

The pupils were set the challenge of coming up with a creative marketing campaign that would capture the imagination of the region’s youth and encourage them to think about a career in the oil and gas industry.

A total of 10 schools took part in the competition, which has become an annual event after being launched last year. Final judging took place at this November’s SPE ICoTA Well Intervention Conference at the AECC

ICoTA chairman Michael Taggart praised all the pupils taking part for their commitment to the challenge. He said: “These kinds of competitions really rely on those taking part to make it a success and the pupils from all the schools involved have really pushed themselves to make it just that.”

Mr Taggart also added that he hoped the award would encourage young people to pursue a career within the industry. He said: “Our aim was to highlight the opportunities within the energy sector to young people.  We are in the midst of a huge skills shortage in the industry so if we can get young people interested and engaged now we have a chance of ensuring that the future is secure.”

The winning campaign, entitled UnCoil Your Dreams, was aimed at school children and involved using well established events like Offshore Europe to raise awareness of the oil and gas industry among a younger generation.
